About Highland Homes
Highland Homes was founded in 1985 by brother and sister Rod Sanders and Jean Ann Brock. Rod brought the business side and Jean Ann brought a creative approach to sales, marketing and architecture. They started in Rowlett, Texas, in a tough real estate market and still sold 13 homes in their first month.
Instead of selling to a national builder, the founders sold the company to its own employees through an employee stock ownership plan in 2016. "We couldn't do that to the company we spent 30 years building," Sanders told BUILDER magazine. Today Highland is one of the largest privately held, employee-owned homebuilders in the country, headquartered in Plano and led by CEO Aaron Graham, with divisions across Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio.

Reviews on open sites like the BBB and Google are more mixed, which is true of nearly every large builder. The most common complaints involve warranty response times and subcontractor workmanship. One caution: there are other, unrelated builders named Highland Homes in other states, and their reviews sometimes get mixed in with this one. My advice for any new home, Highland included: hire an independent inspector for the pre-drywall and final walkthroughs, document warranty requests in writing, and let me help you push for resolution.

Highland's largest-home offering in Boerne, in the 1,700-acre master-planned Esperanza community off Highway 46. Highland is now selling a new phase called Altamira, with 20 floor plans and homes advertised from the $700s. Current quick move-in homes run about $800,000 to $1.05 million, mostly 4-bedroom, 3,000 to 4,100 square-foot homes with 3-car garages.

A controlled-access neighborhood on the Bexar County side of Boerne near I-10, known for larger homesites, many around half an acre. Highland homes here were built from the mid-2010s on, and they're some of the best values on this page, starting around $450,000.
Front Gate (Fair Oaks Ranch 78015)
A gated Highland community in Fair Oaks Ranch, close to the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf and Country Club and zoned to Van Raub Elementary in Boerne ISD. Highland sold its final homes here in early 2024, so homes now come up only as resales, most built from about 2014 to 2016.
Regent Park (Boerne 78006)
One of Boerne's newer neighborhoods, with Highland homes built from about 2022 to 2023, a community pool and clubhouse, and Boerne ISD schools. A good choice if you want a nearly new Highland home without waiting on construction.
