How to Check If You Have a Homestead Exemption in Texas

If you own a home in Texas, a homestead exemption can significantly reduce your property taxes—but many homeowners aren’t sure if it’s already in place.

In Bexar County, you can check your homestead status by visiting the Bexar County Appraisal District website and searching your property address.
For Kendall County, the process is similar through the Kendall County Appraisal District. Once you pull up your property record, look for a section labeled Exemptions—you should see “Homestead” listed if it’s active. That may look like this: (HS is for Homestead)

If you don’t see it, the good news is that applying is straightforward. You’ll typically need:

  • A Texas driver’s license showing the property address

  • The property to be your primary residence

  • To submit the application through your county appraisal district

  • Bexar county FAQ Here.  Bexar county application here.
  • Download the homestead exemption form for Kendall (or any other county including Bexar) here

I walk through this step-by-step in the video above so you can verify your status in just a few minutes.
